UTCT Recce Info
The recce's are open to all and free.
These are not assisted training runs, you will need to be comfortable running the distance and moving with the pack. We will have two groups led by capable people, please bring your own gear, food, safety blanket, charged cell phone, and dress appropriately (100% waterproof jacket etc.) for the time out there allowing you to be self-sufficient.
As a general rule, we hike the climbs and run the flats and downs. Please don't use the recce's to get running fit.
The UTCT 2017 event will be explored in 4 segmented loops in the following configurations:
-
35km- TABLE MOUNTAIN
-
65km- CBD, TABLE MOUNTAIN, CONSTANTIA
-
100km- CBD, TABLE MOUNTAIN, CONSTANTIA, HOUT BAY
* Note these 'loops' will not apply on race day (except the 35km Table Mountain Recce)- please refer to each route map for relevant race day info.
CBD Recce
The 100 & 65km start section through the city centre onto Signal hill, then round the shoulder of Lions head away from Lions head towards Signal Hill carpark, then drop down to the Noon Day Gun area swinging round to connect with Pat's track and the lower Lions path towards The Glen where you pop out at Kloof Nek then onto the lower paths home to Gardens Tech RFC. 23km with 900m of ascent.
Table Mountain Recce
The Belly of the Beast in many ways, prepare yourself for a tough day out, what is actually the 35km route on race day. Heading from Gardens Tech we go straight across & up via Kloof Corner onto the contour then up Platteklip then on top we explore Maclears beacon down Smuts Track onto Echo Valley thru to The Valley of the Red Gods before turning to go past the Scouts Hut near the dams. We descend via Nursery Ravine onto the contour path above Kirstenbosch. The contour is not flat or easy running so it's still work to get to UCT where we then climb up via Rhodes Memorial on a direct route to The Kings Blockhouse. The contour path home is far from a breeze but spirits will lift as you come around the corner and see the green grass of Gardens Tech RFC. 35km with 2000m ascent.
Constantia Recce
An easy start from flowing greenbelts connect you through to the base of Cecilia forest where things turn upwards, heading thru Spilhaus Ravine onto the Contour, we ascend via Cecilia Ridge, a steep climb. We descend via the cement track onto the single track path to Constantia Nek and then its into the wine farms descending into Beau Constance and The Glen. The new route section then follows as we head into Die Hel, up Southern Cross Drive and then into the Diep River Greenbelt to the finish. 21km with 900m ascent.
Hout Bay Recce
From Constantia Nek we run towards Suikerbossie, the path between Orange Kloof & Suikerbossie is a fast runable section which breaks up the groups pretty quickly. We then descend into Llandudno via the road and then onto a secret section of single track down onto the beach passing the Llandudno Lifesavers Hut. Across one of the best beaches in the world onto the tracks headed towards Sandy Bay, crossing Sandy Bay and continuing on the boulders which are tough to negotiate and prove alot of fun for those who understand the terrain. Some good runnable sections here await before we turn up at Oude Skip and start the tough climb to Suther Peak where some of the best views in Cape Town await. It's a mellow descent into Hout Bay harbour where we often grab a fish n chips for sustenance. Leaving the harbour onto the beach we turn up the river paths heading back up the valley, through horse farms and some pretty churned up horse trails. Passing Clay Cafe on our way home via the jeep track back to Constantia Nek. 31km with 1200m ascent
